Introduction possibilities:
Introduction possibilities:
- Mention opposing theories that relate to the statement made in the question (e.g. Theorists like Chomsky would agree with this, theories like Skinner would not)
- State would stage the child in the transcript is in - most likely telegraphic or post-telegraphic
- Explain briefly how you know the child is in this stage (e.g. 'this can be seen through the use of interrogatives')
- Define key terms that are mentioned in question (e.g. child-directed speech)
Theories:
- Skinner and positive and negative reinforcement - children are born as blank slates and pick up language through their caregivers reinforcing vocabulary to them.
- Bruner and LASS - caregivers provide children with ritualised scenarios that allow children to pick up language in relation to context
- Deb Roy and downward convergence - caregivers simplify their language when talking to children. As the child improves, the caregiver mirrors them.
- Chomsky and LAD - children are born with a Language Acquisition Device that allows them to naturally pick up on and apply grammatical rules without caregiver influence. This is seen when a child makes virtuous errors.
Examples/case studies to mention:
- FoxP2 - language device in our DNA - allows us to pick up language - supports Chomsky
- Feral child Genie - never had a caregiver, never learnt grammar - evidence we have a Critical Acquisition Period (CAP) - evidence for Bruner
- Deb Roy filming his toddler - 'gaga' to 'water' - a child's semantic awareness outstrips their phonetic ability - evidence for Skinner
- Berko-Gleesen and the 'Wug Test' - children can naturally apply grammatical rules to words that don't even exist - shows they have not required caregiver influence - supports Chomsky
