Are rape jokes
funny?
Survey
I asked my friends the following questions about rape jokes and recorded their answers; 5 females, 1 transgender male.
1) Do you think joking about rape is funny?
-No (x4)
-Makes you a ‘dickhead’
-Can be politely funny in the spur of the
moment but it downplays rape and is inconsiderate
2) Do you think joking about rape is
acceptable?
-Preferably not, can depend on who you are
around
-No (x3)
-No because many people have been affected
by it whether it was directly or through a friend or family member. Don’t risk
hurting someone for a joke.
-No because it can hinder someone trying to
get over a traumatic experience and more often than not, the joker has not
experienced rape
3) Would you call someone out on a rape joke?
-In my head, yes. In reality, would be too
scared
-If it was a close friend who didn’t mean
anything by it, no. Most of the time, yes
-No
-Yes
-Yes, and has done so before
-Probably not, the joker could become
threatening and put you in danger. Also, anyone who had experienced rape could
potentially be upset by constantly discussing it
4) Do you believe that because of social media
and the fact that people can remain anonymous, people are more likely to make
rape jokes?
-Yes
(x4)
-Yes,
and that is also relevant in all cases of cyberbullying and harassment (e.g.
jokes about race, gender, sexuality etc) (x2)
5) Are you offended by rape jokes?
-Yes (x2)
-Personally no, but still don’t like it
-No
-Yes, because they are awful but also no,
because they cannot comprehend how awful it must make someone who experienced
it feel.
-Depends on severity of joke (e.g. if it
involves children then yes but if it is just an offhand remark then no)
6) Do you believe that because rape jokes are
more likely to portray the women as the victim, they are sexist?
-Yes (x2)
-No, just because someone makes a rape joke doesn’t mean they think all
women are weaker
- No
-Yes, women are always the subject of the jokes because men think women
won’t speak out against it
-Yes, but can also be sexist towards men as it is just another way male
rape is being overlooked
7) Do you believe people need to ‘man up’ when
it comes to rape jokes?
-No
-No, doesn’t want to man up, wants to be a strong feminist. If the victim
is hurt it’s the joker’s fault and they need to own up to that
-No, they are insensitive and offensive. ‘Manning up’ is standing up to
them not laughing at them
-No and they need to be stopped
-No, they are a huge trigger than can upset someone or prevent them from
feeling safe. More people need to speak out against them
-No,
sometimes it is more than just a joke and is plain disrespect. A victim of
racism wouldn’t be told to ‘man up’
